Human Rights Council 54th Session
Item 2: Interactive dialogue on the High Commissioner oral update on the Human Rights situation in the Sudan
12 September 2023
CAP Liberté de Conscience
We are deeply shocked by the escalation of violence in the conflict in Sudan, which has reached unprecedented levels of atrocity, without any of the points in the resolution adopted by this Council on May 11 having led to pacification.
We would like to draw the Council’s attention to a source of serious concern for many Sudanese: the restoration of an Islamist government.
Indeed, members of the former al-Bashir regime and of the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood continue to influence both the political system and the leadership of the Sudanese Armed Forces with the aim of restoring the Al-Bashir regime to power in Sudan.
This is the root cause of this conflict, which has plunged an entire people into chaos and derailed any progress towards a peaceful transition to democracy and stability in Sudan.
We urge this Council and all international actors, as provided for in resolution 60/251, to use their influence to help bring an end to this conflict.
We implore this Council to urge the representative of the SAF to rescind his statement of August 28 to continue fighting to the end, regardless of the immense suffering of the Sudanese people, and to urge him to come to the negotiating table for a peaceful resolution of the conflict so that a civilian government can be established in Sudan.
