On February 24, 2023, the French newspaper Le Monde published an article detailing the new restrictions imposed by the Chinese government on its citizens’ travel abroad. According to the report, an increasing number of Chinese, including ordinary civil servants and teachers, can no longer hold their own passports, which must be handed over to their work units. They then have to apply to their superiors if they wish to travel outside China’s borders.

Geneva, Switzerland – On July 5, a side event, “Combating Islamophobia in Asia: From Awareness to Action,” was held at the United Nations Human Rights Council’s (UNHRC) 56th Session to address the threats of Islamophobia in Asia, with a focus on the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) persecution of Uyghur Muslims. The event was co-organized by CAP Liberté de Conscience, Campaign for Uyghurs (CFU), and the Center for Uyghur Studies. This event coincided with the 15th anniversary of the Urumchi Massacre, further highlighting the regime’s ongoing atrocities in the Uyghur region due to their ethnic and religious identity.

The 39th Human Rights Dialogue, between the European Union (EU) and China recently took place in Chongqing marking a step in addressing human rights issues in China. The discussions, held on June 17 2024 covered topics with the EU emphasizing the importance of freedom and urging China to comply with international human rights norms.

On the occasion of the visit to France of Xi Jinping – the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) – the Asia Europe Culture Association will be organising events in Paris on Monday, 6 May, 2024. The aim of these events will be to express our concerns about the absence of issues relating to human rights violations committed by the CCP in the programme of previous meetings between the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron and the General Secretary of the CCP Xi Jinping and, reading the press release from the Elysée Palace announcing Xi Jinping’s forthcoming visit to France, we fear that this will once again be the case.

At every session of the Human Rights Council since 2016, CAP LC has intervened through written and oral statements on the issue of religious freedom in China. We have denounced the persecution, arbitrary detention, and torture of members of religious minorities, the forced organ harvesting of Falun Gong members, and the treatment of Uyghurs in forced labor camps in Xijiang.
