During the 61st session of the Human Rights Council, CAP LC submitted a written statement addressing the weaponization of tax law against spiritual minorities, focusing on the situation in Taiwan. The statement analyzes the Tai Ji Men case, a prominent example of “perpetual tax bills” where administrative authorities disregarded judicial acquittals, leading to the seizure of the group’s sacred land. It highlights structural flaws in tax administration that violate the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), undermining freedom of religion or belief and due process. Consequently, CAP LC calls for a timely and just resolution of the Tai Ji Men case and broader reforms to ensure that taxation is never used as a tool of discrimination against religious or cultural groups.
