Documentary Premiere | Europe’s Dilemma: Pakistan, GSP+ & Human Rights
An investigative 15-minute film on the EU’s GSP+ instrument, administered by the European Commission. It examines whether Pakistan, a major beneficiary since 2014, has met conditional commitments on human rights, labour protections, environmental standards, and good governance, and assesses oversight and enforcement practice.
The film covers:
- Use and alleged misuse of EU funding and GSP+ trade preferences.
- Pakistan’s human rights record, including blasphemy laws, restrictions on freedoms, and religious persecution.
- Concerns about EU aid reaching educational institutions alleged to have extremist links.
- Repeated calls in the European Parliament to suspend Pakistan’s GSP+ status, and the European Commission’s position to date.
- Related debate in the UK and Commonwealth on Pakistan’s standing.
Featuring contributions from:
Willy Fautré (Director, Human Rights Without Frontiers); Ján Figeľ (Former European Commissioner; former EU Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief); Members of the European Parliament; and human rights defenders.
