Human Rights Council
61st regular session of the Human Rights Council
23 February – 02 April 2026 Item 9 General Debate
By Coordination des Associations et des Particuliers pour la Liberté de Conscience
CAP LC and Human Rights Without Frontiers are concerned by emerging forms of State intolerance and discrimination in Norway. The unfounded decision to deregister Jehovah’s Witnesses constitutes an act of institutional discrimination.
By removing the legal status of a specific religious community, the authorities are fostering a climate of exclusion and stigmatization. This measure undermines the fight against all forms of intolerance, as mandated by the Durban Declaration.
Regardless of domestic legal procedures, the result is the singling out of a minority group.
We urge the Supreme Court of Norway to annul this deregistration.
The State must ensure that its administrative practices do not discriminate against specific beliefs, thereby violating fundamental principles of equality and non-discrimination.
