Human Rights Council

48th regular session of the Human Rights Council

13 September – 8 October 2021

Item 2: Enhanced interactive dialogue on the oral update by the High Commissioner on the situation of human rights in the Tigray region of Ethiopia

13 September 2021

War in Ethiopia and the Amhara people

There is a war in Ethiopia. It started with TPLF attacking the Ethiopian Defense Force of the government of Abiy Ahmed.

In this conflict, Amhara women and children are being killed and their villages are looted both by TPLF and governmental forces.

This has been obvious in lands annexed from the Amharas by force 30 years ago by the TPLF.

Moreover, Amhara farming families are victims of killings and lootings in non-war zones of Benishangul Gumz and Oromia. Elderly people and babies have been massacred in these regions.

Today over 2 million Amharas are displaced throughout the country. They are living without any assistance from the government nor from the international community.

We call upon the international community:

  • to take into consideration the atrocities committed against Amhara civilians in the war between Tigray and the central government of Ethiopia
  • to provide humanitarian assistance to Amhara victims
  • to bring the perpetrators of crimes against humanity to justice
  • to stop propagating TPLF propaganda
