On December 9, the French Council of Ministers passed an amended text of the anti-extremism law, which accepts the objections and comments of the State Council. The latter reflected the prevailing opinion about both French and international scholars of religion, as presented inter alia in a White Paper of which I was a co-author and in articles published by Bitter Winter.

En vertu de l’article 38, ces contributions devraient être déclarées au « préfet », qui peut les interdire comme étant contraires à un « intérêt social fondamental ». Quelqu’un peut croire qu’un « préfet » n’agira que si les ressources sont clairement destinées à soutenir le terrorisme ou l’extrémisme politique. Mais ce n’est pas le cas. La France s’oppose officiellement aux groupes qu’elle qualifie de « sectes » et coopère officiellement, comme l’a confirmé la ministre déléguée à la Citoyenneté, Marlène Schiappa, lors de la discussion de la loi, avec l’UNADFI, une organisation française de lutte contre les sectes qui fait partie de la FECRIS, la Fédération européenne des centres de recherche et d’information sur le sectarisme. La FECRIS, qui reçoit un soutien financier du gouvernement français, a récemment été exposée par la Commission américaine sur la liberté religieuse internationale comme une menace internationale grave pour la liberté religieuse.

HRWF (10.12.2020) – Thirteen human rights NGOs call upon the authorities of China, Iran and Russia to release religious prisoners under threat of being infected by COVID-19. These are the three countries that have the highest number of believers of all faiths behind bars, according to Human Rights Without Frontiers’ (HRWF) database of FoRB prisoners which documents thousands of individual cases.
