Amhara International Alliance PRESS STATEMENT
Performative “National Dialogue”
The Amhara International Alliance strongly condemns the Ethiopian government’s continuation of a full-scale military campaign across the Amhara Region. This escalation occurs even as the regime aggressively markets its recently convened National Dialogue Forum to the international community as a legitimate path toward political consensus and national reconciliation.
The current National Dialogue process is nothing more than political theater staged by the Prosperity Party regime. It is systematically engineered to project an illusion of inclusive peace to the international communitys, while simultaneously bypassing, ignoring, and silencing the core historical grievances and political demands of millions of citizens. A genuine peace process cannot co-exist with a relentless domestic military offensive.
While Prosperity party officials call for consultation in Addis Ababa, their security forces are perpetrating a violent campaign of suppression on the ground. Reports from local sources verify that intensive military operations are tearing through multiple zonal administrations—including recent escalations in the Dega Damot Woreda in West Gojam Zone. As the consequences of this ongoing campaign; innocent people, including women, children, and the elderly, continue to be wounded and killed indiscriminately. Heavy weaponry and drone strikes have directly hit and severely damaged historic worship buildings, targeting the spiritual and cultural fabric of the Amhara people. And widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure, homes, and property has exacerbated a severe, manufactured humanitarian crisis.
These actions constitute severe violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law. The divergence between the regime’s diplomatic narrative and the reality of its state-sponsored violence demands immediate, concrete international intervention.
The Amhara International Alliance calls upon:
- The International Community: To look past the performative politics of the Addis Ababa forum and recognize the regime’s ongoing campaign as a violent effort to suppress legitimate political dissent.
- Human Rights and Humanitarian Organizations: To urgently deploy independent, impartial, and credible investigative mechanisms to document the atrocities in Dega Damot and across the broader Amhara Region.
- To pressure the Ethiopian government to immediately cease all military operations against civilians, lift regional communication blockades, and allow unfettered humanitarian access to affected populations.
The road to true peace in Ethiopia cannot be built on the casualties of its own people. We stand resolute in our commitment to protecting civilians, preserving our ancient heritage, and advocating for a just, inclusive, and transparent resolution to this conflict.
