China: Statement by the Spokesperson on the release of human rights lawyer Wang Quanzhang
The release of human rights lawyer Wang Quanzhang on 5 April, at the end of his four and half year’s conviction, is a positive development. Mr Wang was detained in connection with his work as a human rights lawyer. The European Union expects that Mr Wang's release will be unconditional, with particular regard to his freedom of movement and to establish residence, including the possibility to reunite with his family.
The European Union considers that his rights under China's legislation and international commitments were not respected during trial and detention. Reports about Mr Wang being subject to serious mistreatment and torture must be thoroughly investigated.

China joins U.N. human rights panel, will help pick experts on free speech, health, arbitrary detention
GENEVA, April 2, 2020 — China was appointed on Wednesday to a United Nations Human Rights Council panel where it will play a key role in picking the world body’s human rights investigators — including global monitors on freedom of speech, health, enforced disappearances, and arbitrary detention — in a move that has sparked protest by international human rights activists.
“Allowing China’s oppressive and inhumane regime to choose the world investigators on freedom of speech, arbitrary detention and enforced disappearances is like making a pyromaniac into the town fire chief,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, a non-governmental human rights organization based in Geneva that closely monitors the 47-nation UN Human Rights Council, and a leader in speaking out at the UN for victims in China.
“It’s absurd and immoral for the UN to allow China’s oppressive government a key role in selecting officials who shape international human rights standards and report on violations worldwide,” said Neuer.

Yangon (AsiaNews) - "The Chinese Communist Party [CCP] regime is morally culpable" for the coronavirus pandemic. "What it has done and what it has not done" has "destroyed lives all over the world" and "the Chinese people are the first victim" of the virus, just as they are “the first victim of this repressive regime".
This is the frank, direct and strong charge that the Archbishop of Yangon, Card. Charles Bomakes in a statement made public yesterday evening at 10.18 pm on the website of the diocese (see here). For the first time since the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic, which originated in Wuhan (Hubei), an ecclesial personality has lashed out against the Chinese regime, holding it responsible for the human and economic toll the pandemic is causing worldwide.
